Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that must be preserved for future generations. Visitors can help to preserve the fortress by following the provided instructions.
Stay on the marked routes
We recommend staying on the Blue route that is marked on the map. It takes you to all the main sights and each part of the fortress. The route is waymarked with blue signs.
Certain parts of the sea fortress are prone to wear and tear. Visitors must stay on the marked paths in these areas. Access to certain areas is prohibited for security reasons by the authorities, and these areas are marked on the map.
Sort your waste
Suomenlinna has several waste sorting points that are marked on the map. They contain collection bins for biowaste, paper, cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic waste.
Take the local community into consideration
Suomenlinna is home to approximately 800 inhabitants. Please respect their privacy by staying on the paths marked on the map. Private yards are marked on the online guide.
Use the services on the island
The fortress offers many different services that help you get the most out of your visit. For example, you can eat delicious food at a local restaurant, take part on a guided tour, or visit the island’s many museums.
Open for visitors all year round
Suomenlinna is open in all seasons, not just in summer. Visit the fortress in autumn, winter or spring to see it in a new light! Some of the services are also open throughout the year.
No barbecues or fires on the World Heritage Site
Barbecues and fires are not allowed on Suomenlinna, and this rule also applies to single-use barbecues. A spreading fire could cause immeasurable damage to the precious World Heritage Site. Instead of barbecuing, you can enjoy delicious food and drink at the local restaurants and cafés or have a picnic.
