The construction of the church took place at a time when there was an exceptional amount of construction in Helsinki, especially towards the end of the construction period.despite this, the church was built relatively quickly, in about 2 years, although the excavation work before that was so extensive that it took quite a long time to complete.
The construction of the church was such a large project that it was split between several different contractors. One parishioner recalled in the 1970s when the church was being built, how women walked and carried the bricks. She also remembered a stormy day when the wind blew so hard that the scaffolding for the towers blew down and away along the streets towards the harbor.
