On a postcard from 1892, the church is called the New Lutheran Church. On a postcard from 1906 it is called Johanneskyrkan: when a new church was planned in Kallio, Johanneskyrkan could no longer be called the new church. The hill on which the church stands was referred to in a 1755 document as Johanniberget, and it is said that young people used to set fire to earned barrels and boat wreckage there at Midsummer, but it was forbidden so as not to spread fire in the town. The link to Midsummer means that the hill and the church would have been named after John the Baptist. However, the sculpture over the door of the parish hall bears the mark of John the Apostle.
