The garderobe, or dressing room, was used to store clothes and often served as a chambermaid's or servant's sleeping chamber. The furnishings often consisted of old, out-of-fashion furniture and simple everyday objects. The value of the linen kept in the cupboard was considerable, according to 17th-century family records, and the quantity and quality of the linen was an indication of the social status of the family.
