The imposing grey stone church of Kallio is visible from almost everywhere in the centre of Helsinki. Its tower rises 95 metres above sea level. The church was designed by Lars Sonck, a renowned architect of his time. The church, which skilfully combines Art Nouveau and National Romanticism, was inaugurated in September 1912, and the site and the profile of the building were integrated into the urban architecture. The church forms the northern terminus of a long straight street line. At the other end of Unioninkatu is the Star Tower Hill. Siltasaarenkatu, after the long bridge, ends at Kallio Church.
