In order to save money, the size of the architects' original design was reduced, spaces like offices and club rooms were scaled down, leaving the church hall in its original size. The final capacity of the church came to 13,760 m3, with a seating capacity of 750. Construction started on 14 February 1968. The work proceeded quickly, and the church was officially inaugurated on 28 September 1969.
Back in 1968 It cost 3.85 million Finnish markkas to build the church (EUR 7.000.000 in 2024). Back in 1969 a standard school building could have been raised for the money it cost to build Temppeliaukio Church.
The brothers also designed the whole interior of the building. The church hall, carved into the bedrock, is accessible from the street level. The elliptic church hall is bathed in daylight, which passes into the hall from the narrow skylights between the rock wall and the copper ceiling dome. The inner surface of the dome is clad in copper tape requiring a length of 22 km. The diameter of the dome is 24 metres, and the highest point is 13 metres from the floor. The excavation surface of the walls has been left rough for acoustic and aesthetic reasons. Water trickling from cracks in the rock is led away along channels running along the walls adding vibrancy to the stone surfaces.. Traces of drilling are visible on the walls, due to the wish to display the working methods. The height of the walls is 5-9 metres. To the left of the altar wall, there is a corridor that leads to the Parish hall and other social facilities.
