Kajaani Church was completed in 1896, designed by the architect Jacob Ahrenberg. The building represents the decorative neo-gothic and nickel-plated style of the late 19th century. The decoration of the roof chairs was inspired by similar parts of Westminster Hall in London. The positioning of the spire on the side of the central axis is of German origin. The slender tower with its open sections is a reference to the Italian Renaissance and Baroque styles.

The National Board of Antiquities considers this church to be the most representative neo-Gothic creation in Finland.
