The Kajaani Church was completed in 1896 and designed by architect Jacob Ahrenberg. The building represents the ornate Neo-Gothic and National Romantic wooden style popular in the late 19th century Finland. The decorated roof trusses were inspired by similar features in Westminster Hall, London. The asymmetrical placement of the church tower reflects German influence, while the slender tower with its open sections points to Italian Renaissance and Baroque styles.

According to the Finnish Heritage Agency, this church is the most distinguished example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Finland.
