Defence Castle (1300–early 1500s)
Defence Castle (1300–early 1500s)
The defensive features of the castle include thick walls made of grey stone and brick. Originally, the only entrance to the castle was through an opening on the second level, accessible by ladders or other climbing structures. These ladders could be pulled inside the walls to prevent attackers from using them. This entrance was about 3 meters above ground. In the 1400s, the entrance was renovated with the addition of a gate tower, allowing access to the castle via a drawbridge.
The first floor housed utility, living, and storage areas. A well, one of the oldest stone structures in the castle, was located in the courtyard during the Middle Ages.
In the 1400s and early 1500s, a second floor and four corner towers were added. The second floor was built with valuable fired clay bricks, allowing for vaulted ceilings and intricate decorative elements. Access to the second floor was through a staircase built inside the walls.
