Sotka's Egg
In Haltia's main exhibition hall, there is a large installation called Sotka's Egg. In many ancient creation myths, the primordial egg is the origin and creator of the world. In Finland, the primordial egg is known from the Kalevala. According to the myth, a goldeneye duck (Sotka) made a nest on Ilmatar's knee and laid six golden eggs and one iron egg. When Ilmatar moved her leg, the eggs fell into the sea and broke, forming the earth, sky, stars, and sun.
The exhibition features this sacred beginning, the great Sotka's Egg, which represents the heart of Haltia and ties together the idea of the world's creation. The structure of Sotka's Egg is like a puzzle with over a thousand unique and different pieces.
