Eduard Dietl (1890–1944) commanded the German 3rd Mountain Division during the German invasion of Norway 9-10 April 1940. From then on, Dietl was known as the Hero of Narvik. Dietl was also the first German general to be awarded the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves on 19 June 1940. Dietl’s military uniform was taken to the Military Museum after he died in an air crash in 1944. The decorations on the uniform did not belong to Dietl; they have been donated to the Military Museum by German war veterans. Dietl was a very popular figure among the Finns. Dietl was a national socialist, but even so he has said that “he would not even think of starting to teach the Finns this doctrine”. Even though he regarded Finland favourably, as early as in 1943, Dietl was prepared to destroy Lapland a task which, since he died, was left over for his successor Colonel General Rendulic.
