LAKE LOHJANJÄRVI AND OTHER WATERS
Lake Lohjanjärvi was once a sea bay that separated from the Gulf of Finland when the land began to rise about 6,600 years ago. The lake formed between its two boundary ridge formations: Lohjanharju and Karjalohjanharju.
Most of Lohja is part of the Karjaanjoki River basin, where the largest lake is Lake Lohjanjärvi. It has highly varied morphology, and the quality of water also differs from one area to another. The largest open stretch of water in Lake Lohjanjärvi is Isoselkä, which contains nearly half the entire water volume of the lake and is also the site of its deepest point at 54 m. The surface of Lake Lohjanjärvi is affected by a power plant located in the outlet channel of Mustionjoki River, which is used to regulate the water level in the lake.
In addition to Lake Lohjanjärvi, there are many other lakes and ponds in the area. Lohja has 208 lakes that are over 1 hectare in size, and water covers about 15% of the city’s surface area. The next largest lakes located entirely in the Lohja area are called Puujärvi, Hormajärvi, Valkerpyy, Maikkalanselkä, Kirmusjärvi and Pitkäjärvi.
