Congratulations, you've now climbed 273 steps! Only the stairs leading to the observation balconies remain. At the top, many visitors are surprised by the concrete surfaces. Kallio Church's tower was one of the first buildings in Finland to use reinforced concrete. Over the decades, various events have taken place at the top of the tower. During the final stages of the Civil War in 1918, the Red Guards in Helsinki hung a white flag on the tower’s balcony as a symbol of surrender. During the Winter and Continuation Wars, the tower was used for air surveillance. In the 1970s and 1980s, the nearby fire station personnel were able to light up the tower to help rescue helicopters land safely. The church tower has, in fact, also served as a lighthouse!
