The command centre of the vessel housed all the necessary steering and control equipment. Periscopes were in the middle: an attack periscope for target tracking on the side of the bow, and on the aft, there was a navigation periscope for sighting. Two helms placed side by side operate the hydroplanes for travelling submerged. Depth gauges, tachometers for the electric motors and inclinometers are on top of them.
In the front corner of the command centre, there is the horizontal direction helm for steering the vessel, a navigation desk for hydrographic charts and an engine order telegraph. An ordinary magnetic compass did not work properly inside the vessel’s iron hull so, underneath the table, there is a specially fitted gyrocompass.
Next to the table, there are the valves for controlling the main ballast tanks as well as compressed air piping shut-off and distribution devices. Diving was conducted by filling the main ballast tanks with seawater, while resurfacing was done by emptying these tanks with compressed air. Ammunition and signal ammunition containers were under the floor.
