Janna Syvänoja
Nature, its materials, and events are an inexhaustible source of joy and inspiration for Janna Syvänoja. She collects materials from nature, explores its shapes, and seeks to understand the nature and properties of materials. The continuous changes that occur in nature — growth, blossoming, wilting, and decaying—as well as the variations in seasons, weather conditions, and changes in light and its effects, all provide endless subjects for wonder.
Materials accumulate in her stores, and unique moments are captured in photographs, until one day they find their way into sculptures, jewelry, collages, or installations. The artist strives to maintain an inquisitive and experimental approach in her work. She accepts what nature offers, suggests collaboration, and challenges both the material and herself. At its best, this random encounter and successful touch bear fruit.
This exhibition features a paper-made necklace. The original material of paper, wood, has returned to its past, transformed once again into "Root." In two other works, patterns dyed by plants have absorbed into the paper. "Summer Rain, Grass Scent" and "Secret Empire" invite one to pause and be present.
