The cathedral is rich with history and that applies to the languages used in the church. The main language of the cathedral was Church Slavonic until 1990’s when the language of religious services was changed to Finnish. As a result, the church has a lot of text in Finnish, Russian and Church Slavonic. 

On the arches you can see 4 verses from the bible in Church Slavonic. The verses from left to right are: “Come to Me, all of you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28); “My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47); “He who believes in Me has everlasting life” (John 6:47) and “Blessed be he who enters the temple of Your Holy Glory” 

The white tablets you can see on the wall commemorate two large renovation projects that have taken place at the cathedral. The one written in Latin alphabet is Finnish and it says: “This temple, which was dedicated to the Dormition of Mother of God, was built between 1862-1868 and inaugurated in 25.10.1868. An extensive restoration was done to the cathedral with parish funds between 1963-1968. The cathedral was re-inaugurated 19.10.1968” The Russian tablet reads: The temple for the Dormition of Mother of God was built during the reign of Emperor Alexander the 2nd and consecrated on October 13, 1868, by Paul the bishop of Viborg and the vicar of St. Petersburg. By the 25th summer since consecration, Alexander the 3rd ordered the restoration of the cathedral to be done by the hard working state councilor Yakov Logginovich, after which the cathedral was consecrated by his eminence Anthony, the 1st archbishop of Finland and Viborg. October 13, 1893.
