The cathedral has been the target of robberies in the past. In 2007, the icon of Saint Nicholas was stolen during broad daylight. The icon was never recovered, and some people believe it was a paid job done by professionals.

The other major robbery happened in 2010, however this time during the night. The thieves broke into the church through one of the windows. They targeted two of the most decorated icons in the cathedral, the Mother of God of Kozelštšan and Saint Barbara. Both of these Icons had beautiful pearl and gold rize, and Saint Barbara had a crown made of diamonds. They broke the glass protecting the icon of Saint Barbara and pulled out every jewel they could. The icon itself was too heavy to steal. That, however, was not the case with the icon of Virgin Mary. The thieves took the whole icon, stripped it clean of valuables and after that they hid it in a hole in a park in Turku.

The thieves were caught shortly after the break-in. They had cut themselves while climbing through the broken windows. They first denied everything, but eventually they caved in and told where the icon had been hidden. The icon was dug up in 2011. While it had suffered some damage, it was not beyond repair. It was restored over 6 months at the Valamo Monastery conservation facility, and it returned to the cathedral in summer of 2011. Most of the gold and jewels were never recovered, but the return of the miraculous icon was a miracle in itself.
