The library is dominated by the large bookcase and the colourfully painted vaulted ceiling.
The bookcase was designed by Axel himself, inspired by the balcony in Pargas church and built by Pargas carpenter Karl Kyrklund. The writing monk shown represents Jöns Budde, a monk at the Bridgettine abbey, which housed both monks and nuns. He has often been called Finland’s first author.
The bookcase mainly contains fiction and non-fiction in Swedish and French. There are also several books written by Axel, including two collections of short stories, Spegeln (The mirror) (1912) and Det röda glaset (The red glass) (1942), and an illustrated work on the collections of the Turku Art Museum (1945).
On the ceiling, the coats of arms are a reminder of the cities in which Axel and Hedvig lived together. They lived in Florence and Rome as newlyweds, in Paris for a couple of periods, and in Turku and Helsinki before moving to Naantali for good. The painting above the bookcase is another reminder of their stay in Italy. In it, Axel depicted Hedvig as the Virgin Mary, and the town in the background is Florence.
Axel’s and Hedvig’s dog, Ready, is also depicted on the ceiling. Around the centrepiece, Axel has painted sprigs of rowanberries, which symbolise their summer home Rönnudd (Rowan headland) in Kimito, and Axel’s and Hedvig’s monogram.
Beside the window, there is a drawing of another of the couple’s dogs, the Pekinese Ming-Pi.
