The Bedroom

The Bedroom
The bedroom is reached by a short corridor from the library. There are two side doors in the corridor, one of which leads to the bathroom and the other to the attic.
The bedroom is one of the largest rooms in the house. It has a great deal of storage space. Even some of the mirrors are cupboard doors. The biggest door leads to the balcony, which can be seen when looking out of the gable window.
Hedvig’s desk is in the bedroom (in front of the other window), as is her dressing table. Above the dressing table hangs a picture showing her in front of it. Axel made a whole series of interior studies of Casa Haartman. They are a wonderful source of information about what the rooms and life in the house looked like in the Haartmans’ time. There is also a wealth of photographs taken in Casa Haartman and its garden from as far back as the 1920s to the 1960s. Axel also made careful notes about the rooms, how they were decorated and the history of the objects in them. He had worked in the museum sector for a long time and recognised the value of documenting the home and its contents for the future.
The beds were made in Turku by carpenter N. Bomans Ångsnickeri and were bought in 1907.
The ceramic stove probably dates from the late eighteenth century or early nineteenth century and came from an old house that was demolished in Turku in the 1920s. When the stove was about to be transported to the dump, Axel bought it and had it installed at Casa Haartman.
Axel Haartman was a person who saw the value in old objects and settings. He was one of the first people to protest when, in the early twentieth century, initiatives were taken to demolish Luostarinmäki, the old part of Turku (one of the few areas of the city to have survived the catastrophic fire in 1827) and replace it with new, modern buildings. Axel defended the historical value of Klosterbacken Luostarinmäki and the importance of preserving the old buildings. He also appreciated the old town of Naantali with its narrow streets and old wooden buildings.
