The magnificent Lake Saimaa for outdoor enthusiasts – four ways to enjoy nature in Juva
How do you enjoy the magnificent Finnish nature? Juva offers outdoor enthusiasts many interesting activities and, above all, clean nature and beautiful landscapes.
1. The beauty of the countryside comes into its own when cycling
Many of Juva's outdoor trails are particularly well suited for exploring by bike. The trails mainly run along paved roads, but some of them also run through the countryside. In addition to the spectacular scenery, you can enjoy local services: the area's cafés, museums, restaurants, and beaches are all at your disposal. There are several lean-tos and shelters available for snack breaks.
The cycling route maps on the Visit Juvan tourism website show the distances and destinations along the route. Planning your route is easy, as you can easily choose what you want to see and experience. The cycling routes are marked by theme with clear color codes. The Visit Juvan website also has a tourist map section, which contains a wealth of other information about Juvan's trails, lean-tos, and hiking routes.
2. The Hiiden polut hiking trail is suitable even for the most demanding tastes
The total length of the trails criss-crossing the Hiidenmaa area in Juva and the Neitvuori area in Mikkeli is tens of kilometers. Depending on your pace, the Hiiden polut -trail offers enough to see for a longer period of time. You can enjoy the hiking scenery little by little or extend the route according to your stamina and interests. You can start the route from the Neitvuori area in Mikkeli and the Hiidenmaa trails in Siikakoski, Juva.
One of the special features of the trail is Enkelinpesä, which is one of the sites of the Saimaa Geopark. Enkelinpesä is a boulder from the Ice Age, around which a cave has formed. It is said to have provided shelter from persecutors during the Great Wrath. At a height of one meter, there are unusual red marks in the cave, which are believed to represent humans. There is a campfire site and benches under the rock shelter next to Enkelinpesä. Here you can rest and ponder what life was like long ago.
3. On the Sarkaslampi geotrail, you can see rock paintings and a quartz quarry
One of Juva's geosites is Sarkaslampi, located in southern Juva and part of the Luonteri Natura area. The route, which winds through rugged lake scenery, includes three ancient monuments. Along the route, you can explore a prehistoric quartz quarry and two rock paintings.
The better known of the paintings is the Juvan elk. The other painting depicts a boat. The boat painting takes a little searching, but it can be found at the southern end of Sarkaslampi. The Sarkaslampi geotrail is challenging with its steep climbs and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or small children.
4. The Squirrel route is traveled by canoe
The Squirrel route between Juva and Sulkava is a water nature trail suitable for families. Due to the differences in elevation, the route can only be paddled in one direction, from Juva to Sulkava. The total length of the route is an impressive 57 kilometers. There are nine rapids along the route, most of which are easy. There are rest areas along the route where you can take a break and enjoy a snack.
In addition to canoes, you can also rent rowboats, motorboats, bicycles, and SUP boards from the local equipment rental shop. Guided tours are also available for the paddling route.
