Renovations of the cathedral
The cathedral has seen its fair share of renovations over the years. The 1st renovations had to be done only 25 years after the building was finished. There is a white plaque commemorating the completion of the renovations in Russian language.
The cathedral went through big renovations between 1963-1968 where they renovated pretty much everything from the facade to the inside of the cathedral. During the renovations they replaced the roofs of the cathedral with a copper roofs which would turn green over time. The original roof was actually painted white, but due to extensive rusting it had to be replaced.
The next renovations of note took place between 2004-2007. The domes were re-gilded. About one wedding rings worth of gold was used for each dome.
In 2016 the starry sky depicted on the central dome inside the cathedral was repainted and restored to its former glory. The process took about a year. You can still see how the sky used to look before it was repainted, as a small part was left in its original state.
The biggest project that is still ongoing is the restoration of the iconostasis. The process was started in early 2018 and it is planned to conclude in 2026. The project was started to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Uspenski Cathedral.
