The Söderfjärden meteorite crater valley is located about 10 kilometres south of Vaasa city centre. It is a vast, circular valley area, parts of which lie within the municipality of Korsholm. Söderfjärden was formed approximately 520 million years ago when a blazing celestial body crashed into the area. The meteor created a large circular crater, which today is an open agricultural landscape with a diameter of about 5 km.

Söderfjärden is also a paradise for birds. Cranes, among others, stop here—many thousands of these majestic birds visit the rich granary every autumn. In total, around 20,000 cranes visit Söderfjärden from mid-August to early October. During these autumn weeks, impressive V-formations of cranes head out to the archipelago at dusk, where they spend the night before returning to Söderfjärden at dawn. Söderfjärden is by far the most important stopover site in Finland.

In the middle of Söderfjärden - Finland’s most beautiful meteorite crater - you will find the visitor centre Meteoria Söderfjärden.
