Celebrate May Day like a local
Join the vibrant festivities of Vappu, Finland's most joyous celebration, held annually on April 30th and May 1st. This beloved event marks the arrival of spring and is a unique blend of student and workers' day traditions, and carnival-like fun.
On April 30th, head to Market Square for the symbolic start of Vappu. The festivities begin at 15:45 with a speech from the Mayor and culminate at 18:00 with students capping the statue of Havis Amanda. On May 1st, pack a picnic brunch and join the locals for a Vappu picnic in Kaivopuisto Park, even if it snows! The Workers' Day Parade starts at 11:00 from Hakaniemi Market Square and proceeds to Kansalaistori Square, where the celebrations continue. Vappu is also celebrated with a special programme for children at Linnanmäki Amusement Park, dancing at the We Love Helsinki May Day Ball, and various other concerts and parties throughout the city.
