John the Baptist was an ascetic prophet, who’s seen in the Orthodox tradition as the forerunner of Christ and his cousin. He was the one who also baptized Jesus Christ. 

This icon tells his biography through series of miniature icons, and it is covered with a riza made out of silver and gems. The wings depicted on the riza symbolize ascetic lifestyle as he was known to be the forerunner of the Orthodox ascetic monastery life.
