Saint George the Victorybearer was a Roman soldier who was martyred and canonized. He is one of the most popular saints, being the patron Saint of countries such as England and Georgia.  

There are a lot of legends circulating about him, the most famous being the slaying of the dragon. This motif is very popular in Icons depicting him though the legends originate from the 12th century, way after his death. It symbolizes the victory over evil by following Christ.
