Welcome to the Konnevesi Museum
Located on the western edge of Konnevesi’s municipal center along Road 69, the local heritage museum features fifteen buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. These structures represent the traditional settlement and architectural styles of the hilly regions of Eastern Finland, as seen in the Konnevesi area.
The central building is a log-constructed, chimneyless residential house called “Tuomisto.” Surrounding it are a washing hut (kota), sauna, smithy, threshing barn, cowshed, stable, and hay barn, as well as several storage granaries. The area also includes a windmill and open sheds displaying various types of old farm machinery.
Inside the exhibition building, you’ll find displays about the history of Konnevesi municipality, which gained independence over a hundred years ago. The exhibition illustrates life in the 1920s and 1950s, old professions, and local events. It includes workshops of a shoemaker and a boatbuilder, and tells the story of a traditional folk healer. Living conditions of the past are shown through a relocated parlour and kitchen. The building also houses an extensive collection of historical items.
The museum, which opened in 1964, includes a historical garden with old plant varieties, more than 4,300 objects, a large number of media recordings, and about 6,000 photographs.
The Konnevesi Museum is open from Midsummer until the second weekend of August, Tuesday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Group visits can be arranged outside of regular opening hours.
Admission to the museum grounds is free. The outdoor area and nature trails are open year-round. The museum also features an augmented reality “Cow Trail” introducing historical cattle farming practices.
The museum is owned by the municipality of Konnevesi. Its original founder, the Konnevesi Local Heritage Association, helps maintain and develop the area. Museum development has received EU Leader funding via Maaseutukehitys ry.
