The first successful photograph was taken by Frenchman Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in the city of Le Gras in 1826. Photographs revolutionized the way we view and present the world. Unlike drawn images, photographs depict our living environment as it was at the moment the photo was taken. However, a photograph is not neutral—it reflects the perspective chosen by the photographer. Photographs have been cropped and edited from the very beginning.
By the early 20th century, camera technology had advanced to the point where easy-to-use cameras became widely available. Photography had become a profession. Photojournalism also emerged, driven by photo postcards and newspapers.
This bellows-style wooden camera came to market in the 1890s. It allowed images to be taken and printed directly onto postcards. The camera was intended for professionals and required space and effort to carry. Later, cameras became smaller and gained more features. Today, nearly everyone carries a camera in their mobile phone.
