Our Lady of Kazan depicts Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ. This style of icon is the most popular depiction of the Mother of God in Russia and other surrounding areas. It is said that in 1579 the original Our Lady of Kazan was found after a girl had many prophetic dreams about the icons location. People did not believe the girl, so after many dreams she and her mother decided to dig up the icon themselves. As the dreams had told, the icon rested under the ashes of a house burnt during Tatar oppression. When they unearthed the icon, the icon was shining and in perfect condition, almost like it had never been hidden. The icon became well known and is still a popular choice for wedding icons.
