Saint Sergius was a 14th century ascetic and a monk from Russia.  He founded the Holy Trinity Monastery north of Moscow, having a great influence on Russian monastery lifestyle. He spread the gospel among the natives of the area with his brothers and is very popular in Russia and the surrounding areas. He died in 1392 and he was glorified as a saint in 1452. Our painting of Sergius is part of the same set as Saint George, both having been painted in late 19th century.
