A public naming competition was held to find a name that reflects a modern and international campus. The starting point was that the name should work in Swedish, Finnish, and English, and suit the building’s purpose. The winning name, ASTRA, was chosen by a jury made up of representatives from the Åbo Akademi Foundation, Åbo Akademi, the Student Union of Åbo Akademi, and external members. The name was selected from 582 proposals in an open competition that took place from February 15 to March 15, 2023.
