The Joy of all who sorrow depicts Virgin Mary, surrounded by people that have been struck by misfortune. Virgin Mary is carrying baby Jesus and giving peace to those who are suffering The original Joy of all who sorrow was a miracle working icon, that healed the sister of the patriarch of Moscow in 1688. The icon at Uspenski is made in the style of that specific icon.

Another version of the same icon is called the coin icon. This name comes from a miracle that happened in St. Petersburg 1888. A Joy of all who sorrow icon was situated in a chapel, and during a thunderstorm the chapel was struck by lightning. The whole chapel and icons burned down safe for one. The Joy of all who sorrow survived the fire and the coins from a donation box had landed on it, becoming a part of the icon and that’s where it gets the name “coin icon”. We do not have a coin version of the icon visible at the cathedral, but there is one on display at the Holy Trinity church.
