Which materials were used?
The main materials of Temppeliaukio Church are rock, copper, and concrete combined in a way that highlights both strength and simplicity. The church hall was carved directly into solid granite, and the rough rock surfaces were intentionally left unfinished. The visible drilling marks and channels remind visitors of the craftsmanship that shaped the space.
Rainwater seeping through the rock is guided away through small grooves, adding a living, natural element to the stone walls. The hall’s height varies between five and nine metres, and from the altar a passage leads to the parish hall and meeting rooms. The overall structure was designed to be in harmony with the bedrock rather than built upon it.
