Music has always been at the heart of Temppeliaukio Church. Because of its exceptional acoustics, the church hosts more than 400 concerts each year, ranging from classical to experimental music.
The organ, designed by the Suomalainen brothers and built by Veikko Virtanen Ltd. in 1975, is one of Finland’s finest examples of modern organ-building. It has four manuals and pedals, 43 stops, and 3,001 pipes, combining mechanical and electrical action. Its sculptural façade was designed to blend naturally with the copper and stone surroundings. Today, the organ is played both during worship and public concerts, often by organist Henri Hersta, whose performances highlight the church’s world-renowned sound.
