Aikojen saatossa erilaisia purjehdusesteitä on käytetty esimerkiksi vesireiteillä ja satama-alueilla. Erilaisilla
vedenalaisilla estevarustuksilla on suojattu myös veden äärelle rakennettuja linnoja ja muita rakennelmia jo
keskiajan Suomessa. Suomenlinnassa oli kysyntää erityisesti väyläesteille. Hylkyjen ja väyläesteiden lisäksi
Suomenlinnan vedenalaiseen kulttuuriperintöön kuuluu mm. erilaisia patoja, laiturirakenteita,
aallonmurtajia ja irtainta esineistöä kuten tykkejä. Ilmakuvassa Suomenlinnan saaria ja salmia.
