Today, Suomenlinna Church also houses a lighthouse. But this was not always the case. Few people know that the Orthodox sanctuary, originally built in 1854, underwent a facelift between 1927 and 1929. The political elite of independent Finland did not like the silhouettes of Byzantine-style churches breaking the Helsinki coastline from the sea. The church was modified according to the designs of Einar Sjöström, who won the competition. The original architect of the Alexander Nevsky Church is Konstantin Ton, known for his work on the famous Christ the Saviour Church in Moscow. The church also suffered a dramatic fate when it was blown to the ground by the Bolsheviks. The original bell of the Old Suomenlinna Church is located on the west side of the building.
