The King's Gate of Suomenlinna is located at the tip of the southernmost island of the sea fortress - Kustaanmieki. According to legend, the gate was built on the spot where King Adolf Fredrik of Sweden moored his ship when he visited the fortress in 1752. However, the gate was designed in a favourable location even before the king's visit. Construction of the Kaareva Gate began in 1753 and continued until 1754. Marble and limestone quarried in the vicinity of Stockholm were used to build the gate. During the bombardment of Viapor, most of the stairway to the waterfront was destroyed, and during independent Finland it has been restored four times. The King's Gate is an architecturally significant site and one of the most famous places to visit in Suomenlinna.
