Crypt
From Cellar to Functional Space at Helsinki Cathedral
The vault underneath the Cathedral is called the Crypt. Originally it was built as a cellar, where the heating systems and the wood storages were located. No one has been buried under the basemet´s floor.
The cellar was empty over 100 years until it was taken into functional use in 1973. Nowadays its heart is a small chapel. The Crypt serves as a meeting place for the parish and also hosts conserts and exhibitions. During the summer, the Crypt operates as ´Café Krypta`.
The crypt is open to visitors from June to August. Entrance: Kirkkokatu 18, located on the street behind the church.
