Pine tar was one of Finland's most important export products in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was necessary in Europe to protect and seal wooden ships, and its production was a significant industry in Finland's forest-rich regions. This boat was used to transport tar and was in use during the 19th century in Paltamo, Kainuu. It is 14 meters long and could hold up to 25 barrels. A fully loaded tar boat with a crew of three men weighed over four tons.
