It was built during the reign of Philip II at the end of the 16th century to reinforce the medieval walls of Estepona, a former Arab Istibuna. Its function was basically defensive and security for its inhabitants, promoting the development of an increasingly large population, facilitating the repopulation of the area and consequently the subsequent urban expansion beyond its own walls. The successive construction of houses attached to the wall meant that for centuries the fortress remained almost hidden. Today, after a careful recovery work, we can contemplate part of the castle wall, witness of the medieval past of the city of Estepona.
