Spread along its 21 kilometers of coastline, Estepona has 7 beacon towers, of Muslim and Castilian origin, testimonies of a defense system that lasted until the nineteenth century. After the Castilian conquest, the Andalusian coasts were frequently attacked by North African and Turkish pirates, who captured the inhabitants to sell them as slaves and plunder their goods, hence the citizens did not want to participate in the repopulation of the area.

To fight against these pirate landings, the Christians put into operation a defensive system based on a series of towers from which smoke signals were made during the day and luminous signals at night, in order to warn quickly in case of enemy landings.

These towers are called watchtowers, watchtowers or watchtowers, being conserved in Estepona five towers of Christian origin and two of Muslim origin.
