Herröskatan's flora is very rich and contains several Åland characteristics such as hay meadows, groves and species-rich meadow slopes. The white woodland lily, St. Peter's keys and large stands of bloodroot, king mint and maidenhair fern grow here. The wild-growing timeless, known as "naked virgin", on the western side of the headland is one of Herrön's unique species.

The insect fauna is species-rich and during the migration period many different bird species can be observed on Herrö udden. The groves are home to birds such as Eurasian warbler, nightingale, blackcap and rosefinch. The bird tower offers a beautiful view of the lake area at the southernmost tip of mainland Åland, where sea eagles are often seen. The fortress ruins and wharf remains date back to the Russian period 1809-1917 and the war years 1939-1945, when Finnish troops fortified the area.

In the nature reserve you should follow the marked trails. It is forbidden to break twigs, pick berries, mushrooms, plants, mosses, lichens, wood or stones. Grazing animals are present in the area from May to October, and dogs must be kept on a leash.

Enjoy nature responsibly: take only pictures and leave only footprints.
