Raija Malka 2021-2022

The visual artist Raija Malka and the composer Kaija Saariaho held a major exhibition at the Amos Rex art museum in summer 2021. In Blick Malka’s painterly structures were combined with Saariaho’s music. One section of the exhibition was the intimate Menschen room with a large ball as the focus of attention. Seen close-up the peach-pink object looked extremely human. Its surface glowed soft like skin. At the same time, it was, in Malka’s words, a kind of metaphysical being that seemed to float above the floor. Now, the massive Menschen ball has been brought out under the open sky, tempting us to meditate on the nature of the sculpture. Is it an embryo, the shape of the universe, or perhaps the parent fruit of the nearby apple orchard? At the same time, we can admire the play of the changing light on its surface at different seasons.
