Maria Duncker 2008

Demolition waste from Vuosaari harbour, Helsinki & scrap iron

Maria Duncker’s (b. 1963) Captain Hook is a monolithic sculpture of epic proportions, a mystical punk rock troll and a lone giant who’s chosen his own path. The piece consist of large blocks of granite that were released from the bedrock when the Vuosaari harbour was expanded, and iron scrap that was fished out of the sea. Captain Hook’s closest cousins ”Too Heavy Guests”, which consists of six animal-like figures, stand in Salmisaari in Helsinki. In 2008, Maria Duncker participated in the Ars Fennica candidates’ exhibition with, among other things, similar large granite sculptures placed on the sidewalk outside Amos Anderson’s art museum on Yrjönkatu.
