The altarpiece "The Saviour and Peter on Water" was painted by the artist Toivo Gideon Tuhkanen from Paltaniemi in 1925 in the Hövelö yard. The model of Peter is Kalle Karjalainen from Paltaniemi. Tuhkanen spent a long time looking for the face of Jesus for the painting until Georg Daniels, who had moved to Kainuu, seemed "just right".

Toivo Gideon Tuhkanen (1877-1957) was a Finnish painter, best known for his altarpieces. He was also a teacher and a prominent illustrator. Tuhkanen studied in several European cities, including Berlin and Dresden, where he concentrated on teaching art.

He painted many important altarpieces, which are on display throughout Finland. He also produced illustrations for various publications. Tuhkanen was active on the art scene and left a lasting mark on Finnish visual art. He also owned a farm in Paltaniemi.
