Sculptor Antti Immonen (b. 1973) talks about his work:
"The organic form and modular structure of the Black Smoker sculpture suggest the wondrous variations to which life can evolve. The parts of the work can be combined in new positions and arrangements to create potentially millions of different sculptures.
The welded steel parts of the work have been treated with a traditional stove and kiln black and heated, giving the surface the appearance of a darkened chimney. The idea for the work came from the hot springs at the bottom of the sea, the black smokers. Around these, rich ecosystems have formed, independent of sunlight, where new and unusual, previously unknown species are constantly being discovered."
