The Paltaniemi iconostasis, located near the shore of Lake Oulu, was completed in 1726 and consecrated on Candlemas Day 1727, but the interior was not completed until 1781.
The church is an equilateral cruciform church with a three-tiered shell. The west end has a low tower, originally intended as a bell tower. However, the bells were too heavy, so a separate bell tower in the Baroque style had to be built, which was completed in 1769.
The current appearance of the church: the empirical style of the horizontal yellow-painted ossuary and the segmental arched windows date from the 1840s.

The name 'Church of the Picturesque' derives from the paintings in the flat-plank vaults of the nave. The wall and ceiling paintings are framed with rococo frames and interconnected by floral vines. The paintings depict key events from the Old and New Testaments. The paintings are by the famous church painter Emanuel Granbergby Emanuel Granberg, a famous painter The best-preserved painting is the 'Last Judgement' above the main door, with the upper part depicting heaven and the lower part the misery of hell. However, a significant part of the lower part of the painting has been removed, probably because it upset the congregation.

The altarpiece was painted by the country's first female painter Margareta Capsia.
The Paltaniemi church bells are the only surviving artefacts from the first churches. They were cast in 1622 and 1685.To the south of the church and bell tower is the oldest, almost completely disused part of the churchyard, which also contains a small pyramid-roofed parish magistrate's house C.P. Flanders c.Flanders, who is buried in a pyramidal chapel. To the north of the church is the Emperor's stable, which was moved to the site in 1826.
