The large island to our right is called Santahamina. This location was visited by the Vikings and the first settlers arrived here in the 13th century. Originally, Helsinki was intended to be established on Santahamina, but the site near the Vantaa River was chosen instead. The island has served as a military base since the 19th century. The period following the civil war in 1918 is marked as the darkest in its history, when it functioned as a prison camp and burial ground, with about 1,500 prisoners from various camps in Helsinki buried here. Today, Santahamina is home to the National Defence College and several military units.
