By the pier, you can see our icebreakers on their summer holiday. These vessels keep Finland's most important harbors accessible. Icebreakers break the ice by using momentum and power to push their bow onto the ice. The weight of the ship pushes the ice down, causing it to break off in chunks. The broken ice is then pushed out of the way by the hull of the icebreaker as it moves forward. The handsome yellow building behind the pier, originally designed by Carl Ludvig Engel as barracks for the marine, now serves as our Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
