The castle needed its own well inside its walls in case of possible sieges. The well of Häme Castle is 12 metres deep and is one of the oldest structures in the castle. In the Middle Ages, however, beer was the most important drink because the quality of the water was not good. In Häme Castle, 3.8 litres of beer were reserved daily for each of the castle's employees. Beers came in many different strengths. Servants was similar to the current home brew and the strongest beer had the strength of the current middle beer. The castle had its own brewery on the banks of the Vanajavesi River, where many barrels of beer were brewed each week. Sometimes the castle also supplied beer to the King of Sweden to Stockholm.
The well is now a wishing well and is emptied every five years.
