In the Middle Ages, Häme Castle had two kitchens, one for the servants and one for the upper classes. The kitchen of the upper class, was located in this room. The remains of the large stove on which the cook Henrik and his assistants cooked can still be seen in this room. It is said that the stove could be used to cook a whole piglet on a skewer.
The servants' kitchen was located in the courtyard between the main castle and the perimeter wall. In the servants' kitchen, meals were prepared from such items as sausages and fermented small fish. Bread baked from barley and rye flour and two types of beer were also served.
In the butter kitchen, fresh and smoked beef and beef tongue were prepared. Fish included salted eel, smoked pike and bream, and dried small fish. There was also rye bread and three different kinds of beer. The meals also included butter, which was not served at all.
Next to the Castellan´s kitchen there is a bread room. A baker called Kerttu worked in the castle for twenty years in the 16th century.
