Here we see the new apartment buildings in Kalasatama. The area remained forested and uninhabited until 1825. With the growth of industry, the construction of the harbor began in the 1860s. The Sörnäinen harbor operated until 2008, when the new port in Vuosaari was opened. Finland's first railway, running from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna, began operations here in 1862. This railway connection increased traffic to the Sörnäinen harbor, particularly due to the timber trade. Additionally, the opening of the railway to St. Petersburg in 1870 further boosted the harbor's growth. Significant amounts of oil was also imported through the harbor. In the 1960s, Helsinki's industrial activity was concentrated in Kalasatama and Sörnäinen, making it the largest industrial area in the central region. The Sörnäinen harbor was significantly expanded and developed in the 1960s into a ferry and container port. The first car ferries also operated from this port. The Sornäinen harbor served as Helsinki's roll-on/roll-off port and as Finland's main import center for fruits and vegetables until the Vuosaari harbor opened. Kalasatama is one of the largest residential construction projects in Helsinki. The Kalasatama-Sompasaari area will accommodate 30,000 residents in the coming years. The tallest tower is going to be 134 meters.
